Wow... I completely forgot about this thread! Anyway... The first phrase has a dual meaning. (1) Netherlands is close to Germany in proximity. (2) Its demonym, Dutch, is close to Deutsch, the demonym of Germany in German. It is on the sea, therefore on water. What goes on water? Ships. But ships don't fly?

K then, since this is dead,
The man was a lighthouse operator, so when he saw the newspaper headline saying that a boat had crashed, he went up to the light and turned it on, so no more ships would crash. He then shot himself out of guilt.
